This is a brilliant effort at nipping the downward spiral in the bud when children are at their most formative, and it is definitely running parallel to what I am trying to work on with my son.

Over the last two days my son has discovered the word “hate.” He hates the crayon box when it falls down. He hates having to pick cards when he’s playing Crazy 8s and he even half-heartedly told his grandmother that he hated she was winning.

I have been trying to redirect him and explain that hate is a very strong, but not very descriptive, word to use when describing everyday emotions such as frustration.

I want my son to be resilient and not to jump to negative conclusions when things don’t go his way. It’s something I have spent the last ten years working on for myself and that there’s real research being done on this topic is very encouraging.
